Case Study #1: Treva’s Family
One of the theories that will help me explain what could be happening in this family is conflict theory. One key concept from the theory that will help me understand the issues is that all people struggle to survive, especially as family members come and go, age, and change. This concept of the theory connects to the family’s needs because the extended family includes members that have been added, that have aged, and that have changed. With this concept, I will be able to look at how order is achieved in this situation now with such changes and how it could be achieved in a more effective manner. A second key concept that from this theory that will help me is that conflict may happen because of imbalance of resources or power in family relationships. This connects to the family’s needs because it is evident that members have uneven resources and power, especially in the case of Treva who is trying to use the resources she has to help all but others are not putting in the same effort.

In using this theory, one key concept that will help me understand the issues the family is facing is that people cannot not communicate. This connects with the family’s issue because from what I know Kristen has not communicated with her parents about what she is dealing with verbally but her actions communicate that there is a problem. A second key concept from this theory that will help me is that meta-communication is necessary from time to time. This concept connects with the family because Mark and Malita may need to talk about how they talk about their marriage and what is bothering them about certain situations, such as the unemployment and frustration that comes from that. This lack of meta-communication may be something Kristen sees and therefore does not engage in meta-communication with her
