Fallacies In The Classroom

The game was also challenging for me as well as fun and interesting. Just like you mentioned we want to win the game so it kept pushing us to try harder. Great idea from GCU to implement the game as a way of studying. Before taking this class I had heard of the either/or and the Is/ Ought but to be honest I did not know they were considered to be fallacies. This class is teaching so much about fallacies and how a lot of us use them in our daily conversations with other without even realizing it. I have used the extravagant Hypothesis, the circular reasoning and the slippery slope many times and if it wasn’t for this class, perhaps I would of have never identify them as fallacies.

The magazine article “When They Tried to Steal Our Classrooms” written by Amy Lindahl details the struggle between innovation and effectiveness. In a Portland school, conditions showed mushrooms growing from the ceiling, the heating/cooling system was inefficient as it created unbearable and uncontrollable conditions, and the ceiling leaked water that moistened the hallways. As this attracted the attention of the community, Portland enacted a bond that would rebuild schools to a more inhabitable environment. This evoked celebration, but that shortly turned into a fight between the teachers and the district about which values were most important.…

Wayne Brightly is the perfect example of a “bad teacher”. After failing the certification Twice, Brightly began to get nervous. Dhanishka Pohuja Professor Linda King English 1A- 40396 30 September 2015 Against School Essay: Prompt One “Divide children by subject, by age-grading, by constant rankings on tests, and by many other more subtle means, and it was unlikely that the ignorant mass of mankind, separated in childhood, would ever reintegrate into a dangerous whole (Gatto 3). ” It might be appalling to you to even read such a statement from Alexander Inglis, cutting students by the masses and grouping them into categories, however, what is more appalling is that subconsciously and unknowingly this is what has been happening in most schools. Ironically, in school students are taught to be open minded, nonjudgmental, and accepting of one another when in fact the school…

Should rhetoric be valued and taught in high schools around the nation? Rhetoric, being the art of persuasion, has the potential to benefit many students in various ways. The knowledge of this art can raise awareness of persuasion tactics used by different groups, whose goals are to influence the decisions of an audience, which in turn may promote increased academic success when related to a student’s education. Rhetoric can be applied to almost every aspect of life. As Jay Heinrichs, author of Thank You For Arguing, states “Whether you sense it or not, argument surrounds you.…

For me, the class was primarily about a contest, but not the contest that I originally had in mind. While I was expecting to focus primarily on the contests between different thinkers, and on a contest between the ideas of people within our classroom, the greatest and most important contest for me, was the contest that took place inside of me. The contest that took place within me was a contest regarding soft skills and hard skills. It was not a contest in which one set of skills had to win, and another had to lose, but rather a contest to maintain both skillsets in a healthy balance with each other. Two authors, JRR Martin, the author of A Song of Ice and Fire, and Aristotle, provide insight into the personal challenge that I faced during…

Reflection on my class devotion: Regarding the reflections from colleagues, on “Becca and Carmanie’s”, devotion, it is very encouraging to hear good comments, though seriously, I believe I did not do a good job with it. While Becca and were deciding which scripture text to choose for the class devotion, it was very challenging for us to choose a text that made connection to my story and the hospital visit as a group. I literally told Becca that “we should make a theological intersection and not a tangent !” We prayed and asked God to guide us, to help us see and build the connection.…

As a diverse student with a variety of interests and passions, the liberal arts program and energetic community atmosphere at Bates draws me to its campus. I enjoy learning many different subjects and discovering the connections between them all. Recently, my Physics teacher and my Calculus teacher collaborated on a problem the class was assigned and I was able to see how both teachers concurred the same issue from different angles. As a student involved in many school sponsored service events, such as Wreaths Across America and National Honors Society, I am inspired to see that Bates also encourages students to be a part of the Lewiston community. I would be interested getting involved with the Root Cellar volunteers in the community.…

Argumentative Essay: Flaws of the Education System There are inherent flaws within the education system which we use today pushes students far beyond their limits and it lacks emphasis on practical skill. Schools create a needlessly high stress environment basing their future upon numbers and grades rather than teaching and refining their practical skills. Lots of potential is flushed out of the curriculum due to college and high schools insisting that students must be able to juggle advance courses, maintain high unweighted GPAs, and participate in extracurricular activities in order to succeed in the future; hence, repairing and recognizing the inherent flaws of the education system is crucial to ensure that students earn the future that…
