At the beginning of the story, the narrator states “with the first glimpse of the building, a sense of insufferable gloom pervaded my spirit.”(Poe 21). This also reflects the state of the Ushers as they are both very close to death. Rodrick is often said to feel the same, much like the narrator when he first arrives at the house, because of such a reason. Another point to be made is about the reason the narrator feels such a gloom. The narrator says the house is decaying and points out some of these features “ upon a few rank sedges-and upon the few white trunks of decayed trees.”(Poe 21). When you consider that the Usher house has numerous servants and is an ancient and powerful family why would the estate be like this. However what if the servants have tried to clean up the estate, but it all changes or becomes worse. the curse would not allow the house to become nice while the family is in such a state as it is so heavily tied to the family. To wrap up this point and which is the strongest evidence for this point the house fall apart once both ushers finally die. What makes it more linked is what happens as the house falls down “There was a long tumultuous shouting sound like the voices of a thousand waters.” ( Poe 40). Which further supports that the family was linked to the house because as it was falling the curse was broken as the whole family was finally wiped out by the curse.
