As of today the Caucasian community views African-American hair in different ways. A majority is very accepting of it and actually interested in it and a few number still do not deem it as acceptable or “good hair.” In the black community African American hair is viewed differently as well. There are many that completely despise their natural hair and use many different products to disguise their hair while you have others that love their natural hair but choose to use products such as the chemi-cal relaxer and extensions to ease the maintenance of their hair. Lastly there are those that love their natural hair and have started a natural hair movement encouraging girls to not use the products and grow their natural hair…

Black women in America today are embracing their natural hair like no other time. Although any one race can be considered to have “natural hair”, the phrase is often defined differently in the female African American community. When I look at my hair in the mirror and say that it is “natural” I am stating that it is hair that hasn’t been touched by that “creamy crack” but, rather, replaced with a head full of “nappy hair”. We as black women are making it a point that our hair is beautiful in the way that each hair follicle grows into the various hair textures among us. For many African American women, natural hair is a way to protest society’s expectations of beauty and create a new standard of what it means.…

Race, Gender, and Science in the Atlantic World is by far one of the most intriguing and diverse courses I have ever taken. The course did not change much of my views on the role of races in other regions in the Atlantic. I have learned a lot from the numerous articles and short videos, but many of the topics that were covered were situations and issues I was already familiar with. According to Seiber and Herreman (2000), hairstyles reflected social “status, gender, ethnic origin, leadership role, personal taste, or place in the cycle of life” (pg. 56).…

    I. Home as refuge/protection In Ode to my Mother’s Hair by Joseph Legaspi and The Road Back by Pak Chesam, home is expressed as a matter of refuge and protection. The two poems are similar in the fact that “home” is defined as a symbolic figure, which is the mother. For example, in the poem Ode to my Mother’s Hair, the comparison of the mother’s hair as “dark as cuttlefish ink,” (Legaspi 9) signifies a mother’s natural instinct when danger is sensed. This analogy provides a vivid imagery on a mother’s character in that they would defend and protect, like a cuttlefish secreting ink, when danger lurks.…

Humans are surrounded by poverty everywhere they go, but never realized the long lasting effects of it in our society and individuals. In the essay "Black Hair" by Gary Soto, he explains the life of a young seventeen year old Mexican who struggles on the streets to make a decent living . Soto is able to portray the emotions and experiences of his life by writing the essay in first person. The audience has the opportunity to relate towards what life is when not having a place to sleep at night, being tired from work and dirty because there is no home to go to and shower. Likewise, in the story "Sonny 's Blues" by James Baldwin, a black teacher living in the "ghetto" city of Harlem, explains in first person the struggles of his brother Sonny…
