Chile covers 756,950 square kilometers of land (292,258 square miles). It never gets wider than 240km (150 miles), but it is over 2,800 miles long. It is almost twice the size of California. Chile also includes two islands: Juan Fernandez Islands and Easter Island. More than 17.8 million people live in Chile. Santiago, the capital city, has a population of 308,000, but when counting Santiago Metropolis 6.68 million people live in that area. This is the largest city. The next on the list is the Greater Concepción with 949,000. The next three in line are Greater Valparaíso (934,000), Greater La Serena (413,700), and Antofagasta (348,700). It does have a relatively nice climate, even though there are some harsh climates in the Andes Mountains. These mountains cover a third of the country and there are more than fifty active volcanoes within them. In Northern Chile one will find the Atacama Desert. This desert holds the statistic of being the hottest dessert in the World. Then in the center of the country, there is the prosperous central valley. This area contains the most arable land in the country and is home to the capital city, Santiago. Then in the south one can see the beautiful Late district. This district is home to the indigenous Araucanians. Also in this area can be found the old forests. If one would continue south, he would arrive at Cape Horn, the tip of Chile.
