Dental caries is a dental terminology which can be otherwise called tooth decay. The tooth is the hardest structure is our human body and is made up of organic and inorganic contents It is approximately 45% inorganic material (mainly hydroxyapatite), 33% organic material (mainly collagen) and 22% water. Dental caries is a complex procedure that involves the combined action of bacterial toxins in an acidic environment that causes loss from the tooth structure.

Maintenance of oral hygiene basically aims at minimising the bacterial load in our oral cavity to prevent the accumulation of plaque or dental biofilm on the tooth structure. Sometimes we develop areas in our teeth that are difficult to clean and thus causes a lot of plaque accumulation, it mainly occurs in areas that are invisible to our eye, this is where dental checkup and examination play a major role. A dental professional can clean these caries prone areas at an early stage by the means of professional cleaning also known as oral prophylaxis , getting these areas cleansed every 6 months ensure reduced chances of dental caries. The dentists can also use pit and fissure sealants to reduce the risk of dental caries. Sealants are basically thin plastic-like coating applied to the chewing surfaces of the molars to prevent food from being trapped inside pits and fissures of the teeth. These sealants mainly block the bacterial plaque and carbohydrates to get stuck in these areas thus prevents the formation of occlusal ,pit and fissure caries. Sealants are usually applied on the teeth of children, as soon as the teeth erupt but adults are receiving them if not previously …show more content…
If this force begins at the cementoenamel junction, then progression of tooth loss can be rapid since enamel is very thin in this region of the tooth) or abfractions (mechanical loss of tooth structure that is not caused by tooth decay, located along the gum line.), tooth fracture or may be because of exposed tooth root due to bone loss and periodontal
