Some of the factors that affect writing are reading, thinking, motivation and imagination.
1) Reading- There is extensive research on the effects of reading materials on learners writing process. (Day and Bramford 1998; Elley 1991; and Krashen 2004) report research findings which demonstrate the positive power of free, voluntary reading in facilitating language acquisition. Reading is assumed as an essential input and stimulus for writing classrooms. It is seen that reading acts as a primary model for learning writing skills. Instrumental, Integrative, Resentment and Manipulative. Applicability of Instrumental function is in cases i) to get a job ii) to improve personality and prestige, and iii) to read books/or to see English films. Integrative functions include i) To live and behave like English people ii) To make friends with English speaking people, and iii) To know the culture of the English people. She modified the model of Lambart & Gardener (1959,1972) and added the last two functions. They are resentment function and manipulative function. This has led to diversification as well as confusion at the level of spelling, especially when it comes to classroom teaching of correct spelling. Unlike dictation, a classroom practice which was part and parcel of past golden days and grammar-translation method, use of correct spelling is not emphasized at lower level and thus, students writing ability in connection to accurate spelling use is affected. But still, it is observed that students in classrooms mostly prefer paper-based writing as seen through the survey and paper based writing can never be erased away from the scene. Writing informal diaries are a way to purgation of emotions and sometimes help a student in reflecting his attitude towards negative and positive events in life.
