The FDA Food Modernization Act of 2011 shifted the focus from responding to contamination to preventing it. This law requires preventive controls that are comprehensive and based on science, to be implemented in our food industry, instead of reacting to problems after they occur. First, this law allows the FDA to better protect public health by strengthening the food safety system. Some examples of how the FDA will do this is by having more access to records, protecting against adulterated food, and by reevaluating foodborne illness risks. Second, this act improves the capacity to detect and respond to food safety problems.
