Carl Jung was one of the first individuals to explain the terms extroversion and introversion. Jung said that each person is categorized as one of these two groups. Jung described extroversion and introversion using two famous ancient greek gods: Apollo and Dionysus. Jung said that Apollo is categorized as introverted because he is more reserved. He also said Apollo is more of a dreamer and visionary and likes to think of internal reflection, which makes him more introverted. Jung also says that introverts tend to be unenthusiastic about participating in activities with other people. On the other hand, Jung associated extroversion with Dionysus because he is more energetic and outgoing. Jung said that Dionysus is more likely to partake in activities that the world has to offer, which makes him more extroverted. He says that extroverts tend to be more lively and focus on the world around them. Now, this theory might be somewhat different than the more modern theories of introversion and extroversion, but Carl Jung gave us the basis on this theory. Basically, introverts recharge their batteries by having time to themselves and extroverts recharge their batteries by being with others. Although we see introversion and extroversion today as traits and Jung sees them as perspectives, Jung tremendously helped us develop our theory today.
