There are many different types of extrinsic motivators. The most commonly used are visual and verbal external motivation; these are the two that will be compared in this study. Several experiments have demonstrated that focusing a person attention externally rather than internally can enhance their performance.1-5 The purpose of this study is to determine if a visual and verbal extrinsic motivators increase performance during vertical jump and standing long jump tests. Vertical jump height is a measurement that coaches, health care professionals, and strength and conditioning professionals frequently use as a objectively measure function.6
There are multiple different ways to test vertical jump performance. One of the most accurate vertical jump tools is the force place. There is a great expense that comes with this accurate of equipment. There is also specific training needed to operate it, there are more cost-efficient and simplistic devices have been developed and are now commercially available to strength and conditioning coaches.7 The most commonly used are Vertec, Just Jump System, and Myotest.6,7

This lead to the use of the Vertec and Just jump mat. These devices are beneficial to the strength and conditioning coach because they are relatively inexpensive, require minimal training for operation, do not require extensive data analysis, and provide immediate results.7 The Vertec assesses vertical jump height by measuring the difference between the fully extended standing reach height and the maximal vertical jump-and- reach height. The Just Jump System determines jump height by measuring flight time.
