A cow’s structure is very complex. Some of the cow’s external structures include its horns and hooves. Horns have many uses on a cow. They can be used to fight for a mate, or even to transfer heat to keep the cow cool. The horns are made of a mixture of bone and keratin. The core of the horn is made of bone, and is attached to the skull. The outer layers are made of keratin. In certain species, male and female cattle can develop horns. You can tell the age of a cow by the number of rings on its horns. Hooves are another external structure on a cow that has many uses. A cow’s hooves are cloven, which means the hoof is divided into two toes. Cows can spread their toes apart, so they can walk in a muddy area without sinking. Hooves also help provide
