External Factors and Identity
The Webster Dictionary definition of Identity is, “the distinguishing character or personality of an individual.” Many things influence our identity. Not all of them are good or positive. Our identities make us who we are and how we live our life. Who a person is and who they will become can be greatly influenced by the external factors that they are exposed to. Our identities can be influenced by our Culture, our Friends and the time period that we live in. Culture is the way everyone lives their life.

In the book the Outsiders on page 126 Two-Bit says, "The only thing keeping Darry from being a Soc is us.” Darry was incredibly smart and had amazing athletic skills. He was also very popular and handsome. He had an athletic scholarship which would give him fame and popularity. He decided to deny his scholarship and stay with his friends and family. The rest of the greasers who influenced him to stay a greaser. The greasers who were darry's friends wanted Darry to stay a greaser and not to join the popular socs. This worked out because Darry made the decision to stay a greaser and not join the “in crowd.” A report on by the University of Edinburgh stated that more Facebook friends someone has the more stressed and individual is. In all major social media apps the goal is to have the most friends and be the most popular. This report stated that the more friend a person has the more stressed they are. The more friends a person has the higher of number of people viewing someone's posts. A person want to post something that friends will like. The more friend the more different personalities that a person's friends will have. An person's identity will change because a person wants to make all their friends happy.
