When Fortunato is screaming for help after Montresor finishes building the tiers of walls and fettered him, Montresor screams back to Fortunato louder than him. “A succession of loud and shrill screams, bursting suddenly from the throat of the chained form seemed to thrust me violently back. I replied to the yells who clamored. I re-echoed -- I aided -- I surpassed them in volume and strength” (6). This contributes to the suspense as it shows that Montresor is mocking Fortunato. It also shows that Fortunato has no escape nor any help for him as he implores to be freed. After Montresor has finished filling the niche in with the tiers of walls, Montresor calls for Fortunato but Fortunato doesn’t say anything back. “But to these words I hearkened in vain for a reply. I grew impatient, I called aloud “Fortunato!” no answer. I called again -- “Fortunato!” no answer still” (7). This explicitly shows us that Fortunato isn’t responding which makes the reader believe that something has happened to him.
