John Steinbeck, author of Of Mice and Men, creates a competitive society where the strong exploits the weak. The definition of the word exploit is to get a value or use from something; and to use or manipulate to one’s advantage. By doing exploiting different characters, the author is able to add conflict and tension between them throughout the story. George and Slim enter the dark bunkhouse where a light is cast over Slim. George then explains to Slim why he and Lennie had to leave Weed. He says that since Lennie wants to touch everything that he likes, when he saw a girl in a red dress, he had to feel it. Lennie scares the girl while attempting to touch her dress but he cannot let it go. The girl, terrified, runs and tells the law that she
