In “What is the Point of College?” written by Kwame Anthony Appiah, he identifies two psychological ideologies of why students attend college, which he calls “Utopia U” and “Utility U.” . Students will either psychologically go to a Utopian University or Utility University, though it all depends on their reasoning to why they are attending college. If one attends a Utopia UniveristyUniversity it would mean they are going for their personal investment, and if they attend a Utility University they are going as a financial investment. We may want to become a high-level athlete because we are inspired by our favorite athletes. Other examples of this include wanting to get a high paying job because we grew up in poverty and doing well in school so we can escape living in a bad neighborhood as well as coming back to that neighborhood when we are successful to show the children that it can be done and motivate them to achieve similar goals. My Motivation: What motivates me the most to pursue a college degree is that I will be the first person in my family to receive one. My grandmother is the backbone behind this motivation because she was always making sure that academics came first in my life. There was rarely a day that I would come home and she would not ask me questions about my homework, asking what I learned in school, or even looked over my homework. As I got older, she made sure I was a part of a college prep program called AVID from 6th-12th grade and that definitely made a difference for me. It helped me understand the importance of continuing your education and how beneficial it can be to succeeding in life.…
