How this Awareness will Impact my Ability to Counsel

To improve my awareness towards domestic violence, gaining more knowledge on the topic would help me to assist the development of the issue, preventing the actions that have been done against individuals. By doing this, it would create an opportunity for the counsellor to produce solutions to help improve the issue. Raising the awareness of domestic violence has made me realise that in order for me to become a competent counsellor in this field, I’d have to interact with the client, prepare follow-up

Before taking the course I did not understand why someone, specifically a woman would want to stay with a physically abusive or mentally abusive partner. After reading Domestic Violence: Intersectionality and Culturally Competent edited Lettie L. Lockhart and Fran S. Danis I was enlightened and slightly informed. Once we went into depth in class I had a greater understanding and became very informed on the topic. I found out that there are several reasons why women choose or have no other choice but to stay.…

She states that “the most important message to be conveyed is that most violence continues over time and that the isolation, fear, entrapment, and the risk of lethality tend to increase” (Warshaw, 1996). It is important to discuss with the client what a healthy relationship should look like so that they do not feel like their situation is “normal”. Psycho-education is crucial, especially with this client group because most of the time the victims are unaware of the pattern of abuse and may even blame themselves. During the history of this profession, professionals have found it essential that victims “know their rights and be aware of other supporting services that can help them in dealing with the situation” (Gomes et al., 2013). By describing the concept of power and control and the effects of that, they are able to understand that it is not acceptable.…

A lot of women per year have been hurt and families have been crushed by domestic violence and you could help by bringing awareness. The best help you could bring it by bringing awareness, many many women are impacted by this each year and you have the opportunity to slow down the rate and help(NCADV, Nov 13 2015).The famous rapper 2pac said one thing that a lot of the people and men need to recognize, he said “A woman brought you into this world, so you have no right to disrespect one.” But a lot of people unfortunately do not go by this saying. I want you to think about something, I want you to think about where we would be without women in this world, I want you to think about who went through pain during your birth, I want you to think about all the women in this world, think about how anyone would be here without them. I want you to think about your mom being in the shoes of someone who 's suffering with domestic violence, it 's hard to think about , if your mom was in the situation or anyone you were close with you would want help and to spread awareness, so why don 't you do that and help the people who helped bring people into this world.…

The textbook has many examples of domestic violence and abuse, specifically in chapter 15 it does a great job in explaining the many factors that influence this behavior. The text does a good job of explaining how the abuse occurs on a physical, sexual, psychological, and economic level to control a partner or child (Gladding, 2015). I was also very interested in the assessments it discussed for domestic violence, such as the common couple violence (CCV) and the severe abusive violence (SAV). The CCV is based on a low-level violence that is initiated by either women or men, which is infrequent and noninjurious (Gladding, 2015).…
