This research study attempts to ascertain a link between student’s perception of college professors and what non- verbal messages they are communicating by their attire. Burgoon’s Expectancy Violations theory was used as the basis for the research. The hypothesis posed was that “clothing can influence the perception of the wearer’s credibility and attractiveness as well as a variety of other judgments.” In this specific study, they believed that professor’s wearing the most professional attire would obtain the best level of lecture recollection and overall student perception.

They also considered that once a student “saw the inherent value” of a professor and were confident in their ability, little regard was given to attire. The researchers suggest that further studies could apply variables such as “eye contact, speech rate and interpersonal distance” to the expectancy violations theory. Finally, the researchers did point out that this study supported suggestions from their own universities that professors “strive for a moderate clothing style” and that students learn better when they are not distracted by a professor’s clothes. With regards to sampling, it’s possible that a better sampling pool could have been obtained. All participants were from schools in similar locales and there could possibly be regional preferences in regards to attire and expectations based on attire. The sample also only surveyed communication students. Perhaps including students of other disciplines might have yielded a more comprehensive opinion.
Methods of measurement were consistent in this research. Measurement data was supported in the form of graphs and tables and were understandable by the
