When trees grow, they pull carbon dioxide out of the air and when you cut them down or burn them down it releases the carbon dioxide into the atmosphere again. Deforestation contributes to climate change, a change in the regional climate patterns since the mid to late 20th century until now. “Swallowing Rain Forest, Cities Surge in Amazon” by Simon Romero, published in New York Times on November 24 2012, argues that the impact of increase of population has caused deforestation. Romero’s ideas that Brazil has increased population has caused deforestation, energy projects bring in more people due to increase of jobs and an iron ore mine has also created more jobs are important points; his ideas that migrants moving to the jungle will repair jungle, birthrate has gone down in Brazil and 2 houses are built every hour are less useful because people moving in will cause more deforestation, the birthrate should be a little less but not will not decrease dramatically and houses can’t be built that quickly. I think this is a worthy article because it relates to Manaus and how in the State of Wonder the population has increased.…

Since 1978, nearly 289,000 square miles have been destroyed across Brazil, Peru, Colombia, Bolivia, Venezuela, Suriname, Guyana, and French Guiana (Amazon, Butler, 1). The main reason for the destruction of the rainforest is so farmers can expand their land to produce more crops and the large logging companies come in and take the timber make products out of it. It has also been known that illegal loggers have come in and contributed to the destruction of the rainforest. The World Wildlife Foundation’s website (wwf.org) reported that a study by a Brazilian Commission showed that about 80% of all logging done in the 1990s was illegal (Logging, Viana G. 2). Another shocking statistic that is related to the sloth and the loss of their homes comes from.…

However, this is not to say that logging companies are the only group responsible for deforestation, but rather to provide awareness of the main culprit. While deforestation is inherently associated with destruction, some may ask, what are the deeper consequences? As he continues his article, Stuck begins to develop the effects side of this relationship. He himself writes, “Deforestation's consequences are dire. Forests contain 80 percent of the planet's land-based biodiversity — thousands of species, ranging from microscopic insects that might hold clues to miracle drugs to rangy orangutans, close cousins of humans.…

Cattle Ranches in Brazil This article is from October 16 and it presents information about how people are clearing forests for cattle ranches, mining operations and oil pipelines. These forests, like the amazon, were being cleared at a rate of 149 acres every minute, or 214,000 acres every day. The result of these forests and trees being cleared was that it was causing global warming, ozone depletion, species extinction, rain forest destruction and it has depleted fisheries and desertification. The amount of the amazon that was about one million acres or that is about 10% of the Amazon or about the size of Washington states Olympic peninsula. Each year 50,000 species were being extirpated that’s 137 each day.…

Likewise, Brazil’s concern for our planet has motivated actions that lead to a reduction in deforestation and a raise in sanitized drinking water, making it an environmental friendly country. Brazil has even switched to safer energy sources to depollute the atmosphere as much as possible. Correspondingly, the author includes the improvements that Brazil has made when it comes to the job inequality. “Between 2003 and 2011, about 30 million Brazilians joined the so-called "new middle class," earning between GBP100 and GBP400 per capita per month, and gaining access to formal sector employment, credit, and the country's large consumer market” Pereira (2013). The author concluded his article by insuring readers that although Brazil is the slowest grower out of the four countries, it still has strong assets that make it…
