Examples Of Utilitarianism In Little Red Riding Hood

Improved Essays
I believe that the story of Little Red Riding Hood follows the virtue ethics because virtues involves who a person is becoming. Little Red’s mother tells her to stay on the path while delivering goods to her ill grandmother, but after not listening to her mother’s instructions, Little Red stumbles off the path and picks flowers for her grandmother. Virtue ethics involves, “what we do when no one is watching”. I believe that since Little Red was alone in the woods, she could have easily eaten the basket of goods or decided to go over her friend’s house for fun. Instead, she picked out flowers for her grandmother out of love and no one was there to tell her what to do. This choice was out of her pure obligation and proves how Little Red is a genuinely good person. In her mind, she had to do this because she believed it was her duty and it was the right thing to do in order to make her feel better. Since virtue ethics involves who the person is becoming, Little Red is still learning from her mistakes and is brought to be a better person. When she is spotted by the wolf along the unwanted path, she learns in the end to always listen to her mother. I believe that Little Red follows the conduct to reason and faith and living the virtuous way of life because picking the flowers was a sign of love and respect. God always forgives others and would respect her decision on caring for his other creations. b) I believe that the story of Jack and the Beanstalk follows utilitarianism, the most famous consequentalist theory where it determines the good or bad and right or wrong based on the outcomes. …show more content…
Morality is about producing good consequences, not having good intentions. At the beginning of the story, Jack and his widowed mother are in poverty and sold almost everything to buy food. When their last cow stopped giving milk, Jack’s mother sent him to town to sell the cow. After meeting a man who said the beans would bring food and fortune, Jack traded the cow for them. The principle of utility says “you should be motivated to act not just for the sake of your own pleasure, but for the sake of others too.” After climbing up the beanstalk and stealing gold, a hen that layed golden eggs, and a harp, he did this out of desperation for his family. he wanted to make life for him and his mother easier and care free. The principle of utility also says that the right choice is the one that results in the greatest amount of happiness for the greatest number of people. The two people, Jack and his mother, would result in this greatest amount of happiness than the one giant, therefore, this is an act of utilitarianism. c) I believe The Little Mermaid follows the idea of relativism because there are two cultures in the story, the culture under the sea and the culture on land where the humans are. In the Kingdom of Atlantica underwater, Ariel is unimpressed with the culture after her friend Sebastian tries to convince her of all the amazing events that happen under the sea. Although Sebastian may seem to know what is right for Ariel, morality is a private affair in the world of relativism. Any moral decision that is truly your own is right for you. Ariel thinks best of herself and believes she would be much happier on land where can expand her horizons by learning how to use a fork or how to bathe. She believes the human world is fascinating, and eventually falls in love with Prince Eric. Because of this, everyone should accept other cultures’ practices no matter how immoral they can be because what may be morally ‘wrong’ for one person in a particular culture may be morally ‘right’ for a person in another. When Prince Eric and Ariel get married, it may have been seen as morally “wrong” since a human is married to a sea creature, but relativism is the belief that there are no moral rules that apply to all groups and cultures. No group’s moral

This solution would meet the goal of having Jack maintain a stable income for his family. Another possible solution would be for Jack to sell the beans from his magical beanstalk. This would again meet the goal of Jack maintaining a stable income for his family. A third possible solution would be for Jack to cut the beanstalk down in order to prevent the mountain people from reaching him in order to seek retaliation of Jack stealing from them. This would meet the goal of Jack making amends with the mountain people after he stole from them.…

“The Story of the Grandmother” is a fascinating fairy tale that many people are not exposed to while growing up. This tale predates, and is likely the basis of, Perrault’s “Little Red Riding Hood”. There are multitudes of versions of “Little Red Riding Hood”, each with slight variations. “The Story of the Grandmother” is unique in the fact that it is the possibly the oldest written version, allowing the reader a glimpse at this famous tale’s origin. Fairy tales originally were used as a means to pass the time for adults doing tedious manual labor all day long.…

Moral development, based on Kohlberg’s theory, states that children undergo levels and stages of morals through the years of growing up; mainly in childhood. The theory says that they’re three levels — pre-conventional, conventional, and postconventional morality. Within those three levels, they’re two stages in each level: thus, having six stages in total. The stages themselves describe a child's behavior and their thinking. But, not every child goes through the same levels and stages at the same time —each one is different — neither go through them in order nor all the stages side by side.…

Her curiosity was strong so “Coming to the closet-door, she made a stop for some time, thinking upon her husband's orders, and considering what unhappiness might attend her if she was disobedient; but the temptation was so strong she could not overcome it.” (SurLaLune, The Annotated Bluebeard).…

It is a theory that places the locus of right or wrong on the consequences on choosing one action over the other. According to John Stuart Mill (1863), the principle of utility seeks to promote the capability of achieving happiness for the most amount of people. To accurately explain this argument, it is best to compare the outcomes between two contradicting cases. The Unabomber case is similar to Bulger Brother’s case, however it has an utterly distinct outcome. Both are telling about brothers, whom one of them is virtuous while the other is lawless.…

In both The Odyssey and “Jack and the Beanstalk” the tree archetype shows the strong emotional feeling in their lives. The ‘tree’ archetype is present in The Odyssey, as Odysseus and Penelope’s bed frame which is made out of a tree, that shows love and growth. Penelope effectively tricks Odysseus into recounting her their secret, to which he says, “Shaped that stump from the roots up into a bedpost, drilled it, let it serve as model for the rest” (Homer, 1264). This tells that Odysseus knows of the bedpost. The tree archetype represents the love and growth of Odysseus and Penelope’s relationship, as well as showing their connection.…

It begins with a sensibility that when we become excellent human beings, we develop and fulfil our most important capacities as human beings. Virtue ethics place emphasis on motives and development of morality rather than rules or actions people or society are supposed to follow. Virtue Ethics places emphasis on the moral character and goodness of the people than just primarily action and also concentrates on what we as a society ought to do and not just what kind of society we ought to be. The argument against Virtue Ethics are how to apply them to moral dilemmas and sometimes it is hard to identify the virtues, as they are no specific directions to aid in decision making or dilemmas, and sometimes people find themselves in situations where virtue ethics provide no answers in situations where decisions needs to be…

Virtue ethics, like its name suggests is about character virtues, otherwise known as the golden mean. “The golden mean represents a balance between extremes, i.e. vices. For example, courage is the middle between one extreme of deficiency (cowardness) and the other extreme of excess (recklessness). This doesn 't mean that the golden mean is the exact arithmetical middle between extremes, but that the middle depends on the situation. There is no universal middle that would apply to every situation (Golden Mean, 2007)”.…

Virtue ethics actually dates back to the days of Aristotle (Rachels, p 158).” Aristotle definition of a virtue was, “a trait of character manifested in habitual action (Rachels, p 160).” Some examples of human virtues include honesty, self-control, compassion, generosity, patience and loyalty. Virtue ethics is more about the decisions a person makes based on their character, as opposed to just making decisions based on laws and customs. It falls under the category of normative ethics, which is opposed to deontology, including Kantianism.…
