In the book, Choosing Civility, the author P.M. Forni argues that “the byproduct of doing justice to other is the enrichment of our own lives,” which is exemplified in the rule “speaking kindly.” I agree with Forni, that speaking kindly to others will benefit our lives as we speak kindly more often than not. Most likely there are many people out in the world who believe they speak kindly to others, I am one of those people myself. Throughout researching and testing this rule I have come to find that to speak kindly is not just saying a few nice words, but it is also to not speak ill to others and to also to give praise where needed.…

This shows that character’s reaction prevents bad stuff because… If their reaction is being controlled they could react differently to the way, someone else reacts to something like getting tackled “I’m sorry for tackling you” “nah it's okay”. In the Giver everyone basically says “I’m sorry” to the person, and that makes people feel good. Another reason is that without controlled emotions it would be like high school movie drama “ahh he didn’t even say sorry”. This shows that controlled character’s reactions restricts the freedom of the characters because…well first of all of their reactions are being controlled by the Elders to prevent hurt feelings or to create chaos in the community. Next the people don’t have anything to make actually…

In "The Giver", by Lois Lowry I think that the job of the reciever of memories is honorable and does not have power. For example, the reciever of memories (the giver) has already tried before to change something in the community, but he cannot because the Elders don't really listen to him. Then he learns that the job doesn't really have any power to change anything in the community. Furthermore, the difference between power and honor is that when you have power you can change things while with honor you just get respect by people and you cannot necessarily change anything.…

There are reasons why it could be good or bad to have your life chosen for you. It would be safer because first of all, nobody would be taunted or made fun of because of what they have or decided to wear. If it were all the same, nobody would say anything to someone about their clothes because everyone has exactly the same thing. Also, it could be better because then your job would be exactly what you want it to be based on how you act. If you are observed like you are in The Giver, you most likely would get a job that you would be somewhat happy with, while in reality you could easily get a job that you don’t want or that you have no experience with and you may hate it.…

A third example of conformity in The Giver is, in Jonas’s society, people take special pills for stirrings, or when they start to feel emotions. This is a negative effect on Jonas’s society because emotions are really healthy and not allowing people to feel them could cause a very dull, bland, and boring world. This example highlights Lois Lowry’s warning because not feeling emotions would be bland and boring.…
