Each chapter has maps and illustrations of things that are hard to visualize as well as images of artifacts that have been discovered over the years. These aid the reader in visualizing what she is describing in the text. For instance, she discusses figurines that were placed in or around homes and villages for protection purposes. Throughout the text, she describes these figurines in detail and then provides an image of a mud hippo in Figure 7.1 so that the reader can see exactly what she is talking about (Szpakowska 126). In other places, she provides maps of the area in which she is describing as well as illustrations of things she is describing but does not have an image of.…

One of the tips listed in our Read section this week has proven helpful to me in the past. Setting aside time to read (Bethel University, 2016) has helped expand my vocabulary and improve my confidence. On occasion you should try and set a little bit of time to the side to read.…

One instance of this for me was the < symbol, which I have only seen in math to represent ‘less than’. For the content of the text, I found the information about how the Ardipithecus ramidus genus was created and why to be interesting. It made me wonder if there were other minor differences that caused the creation of the new genus that were of less significance, but contributed to the creation. I found the details of the excavation useful because I was able to understand most of the context information. This also gave me an idea of where there could have been errors made when piecing the ARA-VP-6/500 specimen together from casts.…

When our group had the first reading, we would read our assigned chapters. Then, we would read the block as a whole and look at through a predetermined lens. This process helped me be able to pick out examples more easily as we continued through the novel. As for interpreting, I think my skills in this area have also increased. This could be due to the smaller group discussion settings, which…

Overall, the course content of M464 was all designed to aid prospective educators in learning about how, when, and why specific methods word the way they do. Students enrolled in M464 were urged to look for specific strategies within their field placements. If these strategies were not observed or new strategies were not discovered, candidates were suggested to critically think about what other strategies could be put in place to access higher-level reading comprehension of whatever activities were going on in the classroom. Furthermore, teacher candidates were urged throughout the semester to connect these different strategies to the various levels of questioning and student needs involved in Bloom’s Taxonomy (Remembering, Understanding, Applying, Analyzing, Evaluating, and Creating), the “Five Pillars” of reading instruction (Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Fluency, Vocabulary, and Comprehension), as well as the course text: Content Area Reading: Teaching and Learning for College and Career Readiness by Maureen McLaughlin through weekly strategy write-ups in order to garner a better understanding of these strategies.…

This way the reader is still able to put down their ideas about the book, thoughts, and opinions in writing. What stood out to me the most in Adler's essay is when he says that full ownership of a book is when you put yourself in the book and that is by writing in it. I think that includes in everything he said because for a reader to understand the…

One of the best ways is cooperative learning. This is just basically when everyone works together to learn ways or strategies that could improve their reading. Another way is called graphic or semantic organizers. This is just when the reader can draw pictures so that he/she can understand what they have read by putting the events in order. In my opinion, both of these are strengths of this article because by me being a future educator, it gives us ways that we can help a reader that may be struggling.…

    Federalist Text Analysis

I know that I am more of a visual learner than an auditory learner, but I usually get bored really quickly whenever I read a long text that is full of information or does not have any pictures or graphs. So instead of reading “The Federalist Paper” in one go, I break it down into sections and then use a highlighter to highlight important facts and take notes as I go. These learning tips are not new, but I always find them helpful when I need to analyze the text later on. I also tend to get lost a lot when I read and end up skimming and skipping throughout the text. To prevent this from happening, I often put my cell phone, which is my main distraction, away or on silence and give myself time to sit down and actually read the text.…

There were many instances, either during class or reading comprehension tests, where I could understand individual words but could not grasp the author’s argument. For example, when I read E.B. White’s letters, I was very confused as of why he suddenly directed his attention to his dog or the highway of Maine. I also failed to realize the connection between the two letters when he referenced the first in the second. However, I did understand after the discussion in class, which hopefully I can learn how to read and fully understand a passage after this class.…

    What Is The Kwl Strategy

Comprehension strategies form a bridge between teacher-originated guidance and independent learning behaviors by students. One strategy that I really feel like would be great for an elementary class was the KWL strategy. The students are able to bring in their prior knowledge of the world around them to the “What I know” section (“K”). Then the students need to generate what they want to learn about before they read and then write their answers down in the “W” section. After the students read the text they write down what they learned from the text in the “L” section.…

Karen Rosenberg, the author of “Reading Games: Strategies for Reading Scholarly Sources”, delivers a care-package to students who have trouble reading and comprehending academic readings. Before Rosenberg dishevels into her article, she makes it clear that her article isn’t for the student who can read and comprehend an article well. Rosenberg’s article is packed with tips that would help any student that has trouble reading scholarly articles. For instance, Rosenberg suggests focusing on the title, abstract, introduction, section headings and conclusion of an article in order to understand the foundation of a literary piece. Rosenberg also suggests asking the instructor why he/she picked that particular article, and why he/she wants students to read that particular article.…

My approach to reading has changed over the semester. Before this class, I would just read without taking notes. In reading, I would just read instead of looking up the difficult word or using context clues to figure out what the word means. Now during my reading I annotate and look up unknown vocabulary words. When I look up the difficult word, I would find the closest appropriate definition.…

Learners read many different texts more than they write and through reading they gain much of their knowledge. Reading is mainly the basis of other classroom work such as presentations or writing reports or assignments. The main concern regarding reading has always been text comprehension. Reading comprehension is defined by Pardo (2004) as “a process in which readers construct meaning by interacting with text through the combination of prior knowledge and previous experience, information in the text, and the stance the reader takes in relationship to the text” (p.272). However, most L2 learners waste a great deal of their time trying to understand each single word in a text in order to make sense of what they read and sometimes they nevertheless don’t understand it very well.…
