The dynamic between freedom and oppression is observed throughout Animal Farm. The idea of freedom is proposed by Old Major and the other pigs. It is described as being able to make one’s own decisions and enjoy the result of one’s work. However, under Mr. Jones’ control, the animals are assured that they are living under oppression. They are being forced to work and do not have the ability to enjoy themselves. Over the course of the novel, the animals lose their freedom. They are never again as free as they were between the departure of Mr. Jones and the final steps leading up to the creation of the Seven Commandments.
