Observational studies observe what people are doing or ask about what they have done in the past. The goal of observational studies is to learn about a population as it is. An example is when women of a certain age participate in the Cancer Prevention Study to track the prevalence of cancer and its possible causes.
Experimental studies are studies in which the researchers assign participants to receive a particular exposure. An example of this is when a medication is given to individuals to test whether that medication works and what are the potential side effects.
