In our studies through nursing theory we learned about different frameworks to understand how to provide the best possible care to patients. The first few days of the courses at Western University of Health Sciences introduced us to the idea that nursing theory or concepts can be borrowed or interchanged. To explain, the theorists have formed theory based on their specific time era, culture, country or region. There were founding developmental psychologists and framework that helped build the foundation for specific nursing theories. The first founding influential psychologists can be considered as; Gessell, Freud, Erickson, Gould, and Stantrock. Secondly, building off borrowed theory we have been taught about Grand Theory. The idea behind Grand Theory is built off different abstract ideas, trends, or a combination of theories to provide excellent or groundbreaking nursing care to patients. However, the downfall to Grand Theory is that it can be very abstract and hard to define or have specificity. Middle Range Theory was the next topic we were taught. Middle Range Theory is based off evidence. It starts to become more specific, and focusing on a testable hypothesis. The theory that comes out of Middle Range is often something that evolves from past work from influential work, popular grand theory work. Lastly, the theories that come from Practice Theory are specific to nursing, or situations that arise in the nursing environment. Under these theories they also have a specific testable hypothesis and have evolved from Grand and Middle Ranged Theory. As medicine has evolved, so has the need to use a combination of theories to provide care to patients in complex situations. My personal obligation is to serve the people of the Yakama Nation. Providing care with Dr. Leininger’s Sunrise Model in mind will help me to overcome many obstacles and barriers. Regardless of reservation, I will be able to take each patient into consideration with cultural sensitivity. I have to take my Nursing Role much deeper than most students in the sense that I have to dig deep into our unwritten laws and teachings to be able to provide my patients at a therapeutic level. The elderly population that would arrive in the Indian Health Care Clinic will always be hesitant to receiving the medicine from non-enrolled members. This generation was mostly damaged by the past historical acts where our lands were taken, treaty’s broken, and frequent acts of racism.
