My mother, Lilian and my eldest sister, Leigh Jimenez live in the same house in Las Vegas, NV. Lastly, my elder sister, Lorraine lives in Chicago, IL with her fiancé.
When we were in the Philippines, my parents educated and disciplined us. I do think that my family was very traditional in raising us to be masculine or feminine. My mother instructed us that a lady should present herself nicely, look presentable, neat, and well-fitted clothing in the best possible way at all time. So, we had had to dress ourselves appropriately and should have a great hairstyle as well. Moreover, my mother showed us how to do household chores, such as, dusting, sweeping and mopping the floor, cooking, washing the dishes, do the laundry, fold the clothes, and etc. And with my younger brother, my father taught him

My family had a set schedule and an alternative obligations and duties every day. For instance, my father would do the grocery and cook every weekend. My two eldest sisters would wash the dishes and cook lunch on weekdays. Myself would cook dinner on weekdays and do laundry every twice a week, and my younger brother would set the table every day and help me fold the clothes. However, my mother has to work every day; so, we do not expect her to do any chores once she gets home. I would say we did very well for making and keeping our duties every day and through this experience, we improved, became more accountable and this helped increase our self-esteem as

The stigmatization of the chronically ill and elderly are attributed to a lack of understanding resulting from medical students’ inexperience with the effects social environment has on the lifestyle of the chronically ill (Mullen et al., 2010). In attempt to resolve this stigma, the ‘Life History Project’ was designed to enlighten medical students to the hardships of living with a chronic disease and in so doing making them more positively inclined towards the chronically ill (Mullen et al., 2010). The Life History Project (LHP) consisted of two semi-formal interviews with chronically ill patients and their carers by first-year medical students. Moreover, due to Glaswegians’ overwhelming amount of poverty, majority of candidates were economically…

20 Ways I Have Been Gendered 1. Being given toys that involve gender roles (Toy soldiers, playing cops and robbers, star wars action figures) These toys helped me re-enact male identified roles in the military, and behave like male identified characters in movies. I was given toys which had body types anatomically similar to my sex assigned at birth. I used these to practice how I was supposed to behave based on societies prescribed gender characteristics. 2.…

My heritage is one of mixed roots as many American families now are. The family gene pool is pulled from a variety of different ethnicities including Choctaw Indian, Irish and German. When America was formed the Irish were viewed as lower class and poor and this limited the work they were permitted to perform. My great, great, grandfather, who was Irish and German, married a Choctaw Indian lady when he was only 22 years old and has been in the country for only a short amount of time. The marriage permitted him to build his home on the Indian reservation in Tulsa, Oklahoma.…

In "Barbie Girls vs. Sea Monsters," Michael Messner discusses a "magnified moment" of everyday gender role socialization. Gender role socialization is "the subtle, pervasive process of becoming masculine or feminine" (Ferris and Stein 248) Children are socialized into gender roles through families, schools, peers, and the media, as well as other social institutions. Messner observes how a group of four- and five-year-old children construct gender as they begin their first season in an organized soccer league. Before the opening ceremony of the soccer league, the Barbie Girls began performing gendered behavior as they rallied around their team 's Barbie float and began singing a Barbie song.…

On a foggy, rainy afternoon, as I entered into my grandmother, Jan Yund’s, living room she clicked the mute button on the television remote and released her dogs astray to avert any disturbances. With the dogs and television out of sight, we both serenely rested on the sofa and isolated ourselves from the outside world for an hour in nearly complete silence. In fact, it was so silent that we could easily hear each rain drop drip onto her black-topped driveway and our own particular thoughts. As I sat there, I hoped that my grandmother could not hear my thoughts because, at that brief moment, I realized that my grandmother actually remembered our interview. Although I contacted her by telephone two weeks prior to the set date, she often overschedules…

Books have made a huge impact on my future goals; besides getting to explore a wide range of philosophies and personalities, writers such as Plato and Nietzsche influenced my perception of various aspects of my life and the world as a whole. Specifically, On the Genealogy of Morals, by Nietzsche, provoked my curious mind and ever-growing cravings for each and every element of knowledge. It grabbed my attention to how biology and philosophy could be braided into one; I loved how it united two perceived to be fundamentally divergent systems, portrayed their interactions and how they could proceed together, thus leading to a quantum leap in both. Further on, it steered my mind to focus on uniting every aspect of my life and discerning that all it requires to merge my keen interest in pursuing a degree in finance and my lifelong dedication to martial arts, is creating a balance.…
