This week, my ah-ha moment kind of angers me. In my new third grade classroom there is a student who is very low on every academic level. She is 10 years old, does not grasp phonics, can not read but attempts to sound out every letter, and she can only COPY a 100's chart but still gets very confused if not guided. I have been in the classroom for about four days now and my heart is so sad for this child. I think all of her previous teachers have failed her because she should not be in third grade right now. My ah-ha moment is to never let a child move on to a grade when they are not ready. This poor student have been failed. somewhere along the line a teacher or parent could have intervened to get her some much needed help.
