Selling is “involves more back-and-forth between leaders and followers. Leaders ‘sell’ their ideas and message to get group members to buy into the process.” (Cherry, web). Selling requires more work and motivation from the team and requires less hands-on work from the leader. In Remember the Titans Coach Boone takes the football players for a run to Gettysburg, there he says “You listen…and you take a lesson from the dead. This is when the leader gives less direction and starts letting the team or group make new ideas and decisions. They are being guided by the leader not being told exactly what to do. A wonderful example of Participating in Remember the Titians is at football camp. Gerry approaches Ray about not blocking his man and it seems as if a fight is going to ensue. Some coach tries to run and brake it up but Coach Yoast stops him and says “Wait a minute, wait, wait. Let them handle this” (Remember the Titans). Coach Yoast is using participation. He let Gerry make the action but he guided it. The last style is Delegating. Delegating is when the leader “Turnover responsibility for decisions and implementation” (Power point slides). This happened in Remember the Titans when Coach Boone goes to Coach Yoast and hands him a analysis of opposing team plays. Coach Yoast tells Coach Boone “The only time we’d be seeing Ed Henry is at the state championship.” Coach Boone responds “Mm-hmm” (Remember the Titans). This jester meant Coach Boone delegating his power to Coach Yoast and Coach Yoast stepped up to take charge. All of these styles are different but important and a good leader knows when to use
