As Atticus comes into the room after being called, while he’s talking to Dill, “Jem was standing in a corner of the room, looking like the traitor he was,” (Lee 141). It is inferred that Jem awkwardly stood in the corner because he “betrayed” his friend by being mature, yet Dill and Scout just don’t understand what growing up is yet. The reader even sees Scout referring to Jem as a “traitor”. She thinks this because, through her eyes, Jem is still a carefree, daring child. Yet, Jem isn't a young boy anymore, he's becoming more responsible along with being a teenager.…

Atticus is the only brave human being, due to the fact that he shot Tim Johnson when Heck Tate passes the gun off to him. When Scout suggests telling her friends at school about her father’s heroic actions, Jem disagrees and replies, “Naw, Scout, it’s something you wouldn’t understand. Atticus is real old, but I wouldn’t care if he couldn’t do anything- I wouldn’t care if he couldn’t do a blessed thing” (131). After Jem witnesses his father’s courageousness, he feels respect towards his father, when he previously thought that he was old and incapable of being courageous. A gentlemen, like Atticus, does not brag about his…

As Jem explains his thoughts to Scout, he reasons, “If there’s one kind of folks, why can’t they get along,” and concludes that they must differ from one another due to deep divides that cause them to fail at coexistence with those who hold different opinions (227, Lee). Based on the reasoning Jem divulges to Scout, it can be inferred that Jem learned how to reason and it led to cynicism and shattered innocence. In order to explain his views, he must try to come to terms with a new and more adult reality. As children experience the adult world, they generally witness shocking reality and develop judgement which can cause a cynical view of…

This quote is right after they found Dill hiding under a bed and Jem and Scout were reacting to it. Rather than going along with some scheme like earlier in the story, Jem tells Dill that his mother would be worried and tells Atticus. This shows courage, because instead of following his friends, he follows his own judgement and does the right thing. This also shows that Jem is indeed maturing and doing what he thinks is the most moral thing. I predict that Jem will continue growing up and will do the right thing throughout the rest of the story, and I believe this because Jem as slowly been developing already.…
