23 April 2015 Greed in The Great Gatsby In the past few generations, money is the biggest asset in everyone's life. Money basically dictates anything you could do in the world. People that have more money, most likely have more opportunities then others. In the Great Gatsby, money is everything. Greed is a big problem in America, that could eventually lead to the demise of American society as we know it. This is illustrated in The a Great Gatsby very often. All the characters, at some point in the book, are greedy. Tom was born an East Egger, which was something that Gatsby could never achieve. No matter what he did, he would always be a West Egger. Although Gatsby could have been an economic equal to Tom, he would never be a social equal." (Greed in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby)"I never loved him,' she said with perceptible reculance.” Gatsby did anything he could to fulfill his greed for daisy, by targeting daisy with her greed of the lifestyle and money that Gatsby had gained.Her voice is full of money... That was it. I'd never understood before. It was full of money - that was the inexhaustible charm that rose and fell in it, the jingle of it, the cymbal's song of it..."(Fitzgerald).What eventually became the downfall of Gatsby, was that he believed the money would win him daisy back, but he would never be accepted because even though he had the money and the lifestyle, he wasn't considered the same class as Tom, because he was a West Egger. In the end,many reasons, along with his inability to accept his role in their society, was the downfall of Gatsby, and led to his death. The main reasons being greed, lies, deceit, selfishness, and much more. This is also the reason nobody attended Gatsby's funeral, they didn't like Gatsby, they liked his money and lavish parties he threw. Even though it's not a true story, it's sad to see all the discrimination and division in society, and seeing Gatsby taken advantage of, and wrongly killed.
