There was a recent episode where Mary was raped and her mother in law, Catherine, has to tell her to have strength and she has to go out into the throne room and not let others see how week and broken she was. Mary cannot show that she was touched or even give away the slightest hint that she was touched because if she gave off the notion, her people and the court will know it is not safe and have no one to turn to. Women are portrayed as weak, emotional, and unstable, but Mary has to be more than that because it is her duty as a Queen to be just as strong as her King. Francis also deals with a gender situation because Narcisse tells him that he cannot be a weak King because if he continues to show mercy to those that defy the nobles and the throne, he will be overthrown or worse. Gender images are strong because you have the ladies-in-waiting, royal cousin, bastard brother, past Queen of France, and the other nobles; the images do vary mainly because of the statuses of the characters and what roles they must follow. I believe that they are traditional because it has been passed down from each generation to the next on what is to be expected of them; if they are broken, they will be viewed as weak and not worthy of their status. These messages affect viewers in ways that remind male and females that there is always a gender image that they must uphold and no matter your status, there are rules that must be followed because it is the norm; being different is not ok in the eyes of everyone else.
