False Dichotomy Division Among Believers

Coming from two religious backgrounds have been challenging to my faith as a Christian. My first fellowship was that of the Baptist faith. Later to be joined to the Pentecostal and Charismatic faith. I discovered a misleading since of contrast in both ecclesiastical backgrounds. There is a dissimilarity in approach, concept and exchange of concepts amongst the two denominations. Churches are divided by their own since of doctrine, giving rise toward division. This is in part due to an absence of interpretation when debating doctrine. Kapic writes that, “God’s knowledge of Himself is pure and full, while our knowledge of him is derivative and incomplete” (pp. 32).

Mark 16:15 states, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation” (NIV). When persons of other devout religious backgrounds ask, what is your belief? My response is, I am neither Baptist nor Pentecostal but simply a believer and follower of Christ. Whether Christian or non-Christian are we not all believers or followers of something? What is it that makes us one? I speak as Christian. Simply our connection in Christ. We are divided by our lack of understanding of the scripture. One believes salvation is evident only if there are evidences of a known language, not truly understanding that salvation and our redemption lies only in our confession and belief in Jesus. Others believe we are reconciled and forgiven only if baptism is recited “In the name of Jesus”. Neither understanding that baptism signifies we have confessed our sins and are now believers in Christ. “if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins

Although many consider racial issues as a figment of history, a buzzword in news or a controversial topic for political arguments, racism has not and will not be resolved until individuals begin taking responsibility for their own racially unjust mindsets. These issues are discussed in two articles, “White Fragility” by Robin DiAngelo and the Christian Churches Together’s response to Martin Luther King Jr.'s letter from the Birmingham jail. Although these two articles discuss the same topic, they consider different approaches to the topic and speak to different audiences. Together, however, they both try to answer the question, "How should we act ethically towards racial diversity within the United States and the world?” In Robin DiAngelo’s,…

Patricia, I used that scripture in my discussion as well. It tells us some much when it comes to confessing and believing in the word of God. It tells is the baptism is not a requirement to obtain God's salvation, but our faith is what draws us nearer to God. Faith and believing is what allows God to enter in our hearts. With different religious opinions, there will always be a debate on what is required for God's salvation.…

“The Bible, Africa, and the Church in the Postmodern Era” Another key point, as leaders, pastors, etc. there must be an understanding of the word “postmodern” in order to see the impact it has in African American churches today. If understanding correctly, postmodern thinking implies pleasing people rather than God is okay. In other words, forbidden things are acceptable now; having no biblical insight, denial of absolute and objective truth is the current fade, also to some God really don’t exist. However, it is important to remember Scriptures will clarify all the deceptive, misleading of the postmodern era.…

My Christian beliefs, after reading the book by C.S. Lewis, are distinctly more complex than what I believed earlier. It is not necessarily that they are different; they have just evolved. In order for Christians to explain Christianity to others, we need to understand Christian foundations ourselves. My parents taught me my Christian beliefs and I first believed those Christian principles on blind faith alone. While blind faith belief was acceptable as a child, there comes a point when one must discover, on their own, what it truly means to be a Christian.…

This can be portrayed by the discussions I have had in my First Year Seminar class as well as the readings and examples from the Bible. I believe that if you look at your past and beliefs and combine them with the experience and beliefs of other people you will truly understand what it means to live in the world. “One of the best ways to understand a person is to become familiar with his or her past.” (Why College Matters To God, 35) I am from a small town in northern Arizona where many religions collide.…

“ If everyone howled at every injustice, every act of barbarism, every act of unkindness, then we would be taking the first step to real humanity”. This quote was once said by a man named Nelson Demille. In the 1930s, in the south's social injustice system of Jim Crow Laws impacted lives of not just blacks but whites as well. It caused many disputes and problems between the two races. To this day we still have racial tensions in the air but not with just these two groups.…

    Diversity In Religion

Most people are their religion as a safe haven, a place to turn to when the woes of the world seem very dire and extreme. But, what happens when the places where religions are practice—generally called churches—are plagued with the same issues that are prevalent in every other aspect of society? The issues of racism and managed diversity are no strangers to religious interactions. In the article “Managed Diversity; Race, Place, and an Urban Church”, these concepts are examined in relation to religious interactions. The author, Jessica M. Baron, a theologist and sociologist delved into inner-city churches over the span of 18 months to study the manifestation of racism and managed diversity in church communities.…

The thirty years war was evidence that when certain Christians denominations hold on to their core doctrines as the only truth, it results to violence, division amongst believers, and unchristian conducts. As Christians, we need to all agree with the gospel as the core of our faith while compromising of other doctrines that we differ on. It saddens me that we have so many denominations. Even though there may be some difference between people of the Catholic faith, the Catholic church does a better job unifying its churches more than the protestant churches.…

In the opening foreword to the book, Taking Religious Pluralism Seriously: Spiritual Politics on America’s Sacred Ground, prominent author and Professor of Comparative Religion and Indian Studies at Harvard University Diana L. Eck highlights the importance of pluralism in the United States. “Pluralism is much more than the simple fact of diversity. Pluralism is not a given, but an achievement. It is engaging that diversity in the creation of a common society.” In a way, this statement summarizes the accomplishment in studies made concerning the study of religious pluralism.…

In my life so far I’ve been exposed to various religions. My encounters have granted me the privilege to learn and understand each religion independently. What puzzled me the most was coming across a religion that wasn’t identified as a “religion” by a believer. In this chapter of Religion Pluralism, I wish to challenge those who are Christians to first take a step back and reanalyze the definition of religion. In order to obtain a more concise and understanding of religions and their values, I believe that redefining religion in itself would be necessary.…
