Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare is a play written to show contrast and duality. Shakespeare includes literary devices involving detailed characters, language, and events to prove that everything has two sides and may not seem as it appears. Shakespeare creates vivid characters that capture your attention. However, the characters have two sides and are not what they seem to be. One example is that Lord Capulet seems to be a great father, who watches over his daughter and really cares for her. But, he really just cares about passing his name down and saving his money. Romeo states, “Out of her favour, where I am in love”(I I 173). There are two sides to love. It looks like love would be wonderful, but it has another side to it. Romeo isn’t in Rosaline’s favour, but that is where he is in love. Romeo also notes, “Here’s much to do with hate, but more with love”(I I 180). Because Romeo is loyal to his own family, it means he must hate the other, even if he really doesn’t. While Friar was gathering herbs and pondering the nature of reality, he says that Earth is where you bury people. At the same time, it is where things grow and, it helps support life. Friar Lawrence also says, “Not aught so good but, strained from that fair use,/ Revolts from true birth, stumbling on abuse”(II iii 19-20).
