Dehumanization is a serious problem in the United States and in many other countries. Dehumanization is the psychological process of criticizing someone, making them seem and feel less than human. It denies human treatment to someone and gives them subhuman treatment. This is an obtained response or a result because nobody is born viewing somebody as less than human. Also, it is an certain belief of the tormentors that their victims are subhuman. The treatment can be made out to an individual or group. A couple examples of dehumanization is Jews in the eyes of Nazis and slavery in the past. Dehumanization is a cruel act that is difficult for the victims to deal with, but it can be prevented.
Victims of dehumanization are shown no compassion and face violence and oppression. Conflict causes uneasy relationships and makes it difficult for groups to recognize that they’re part of a human community. This can lead to feelings of hatred and unfriendliness between different groups of people. Also, there may be feelings of anger, fear or distrust, that shape the way that different groups regard one another (Maiese p. 5).
