What is the meaning of life? Now that I am in college I find myself pondering this question often. Some students come to college because they were forced by their parents. Other students continue on to college simply to receive an education. While still others take it a step further and pursue an education as a means to get a “better” job and make more money. So I ask again, what is the meaning of life? According to Seneca, pursuing an education as an end to making money is unworthy. This can be seen in his letter entitled, On Liberal and Vocational Studies, where he explains, “I have no respect for any study whatsoever if its end is the making of money. It has been said before that more money means more power. Money accommodates our needs just as much as our cravings; for some it is materialistic and for others it is often psychological. Although money can provide many things, one must never forget that once it is lost the brief bliss and sense of security will follow. Many often value money more than its essential purpose. If society continues to go in this direction, a never-satisfying cycle will continue to exist among younger generations, causing them to chase a life of luxury rather than pursuing a more fulfilling life filled with passion. If I seek a degree merely to increase my own monetary wealth then what is to say my children will not do the same, and follow in my footsteps. I am the example for the future generations to seek knowledge and inspiration from. I refuse to be entrapped in this repetitive cycle society attempts to cover up. As a result, I chose a major that would not expand my capital wealth, but rather fulfill my hunger to help others.
