In the novel The Outsiders, S.E Hinton makes use of the literary element of conflict to develop the characters personality. This quote is explaining the concept of Sodapop putting realization in both of the brothers minds, Darry and Ponyboy, that they should love each other more. Also the quote is the resolution of the problem Darry and Ponyboy have been having, throughout the novel. At this moment in the book both boys are hit with the obvious information that they have been missing the fact of giving, love and family to each other. After the crash, that does not happen during but before the book is set, this conflict becomes stronger, as Darry feels he needs to take more responsibility. This is a major conflict as it really triggers hopelessness
