One prominent reoccurring theme is the idea of dharma. Ashoka mentions “dhamma”, or “dharma”, frequently, almost in every edict. A prime example of this is in the fourth edict, which states that Ashoka and his descendents will “… continue to promote dhamma practice until the end of time; living in dhamma and virtue, they will instruct in dhamma” (4).
