One example that Alex is taking action to find out the history of her family, by looking for her biological dad. Alex was looking up her dad in order to learn about him after reading the letters. She found his phone number and decided to call him. “‘Is Keith Mitchell there?’ I asked. My hand was getting sweaty, so I tried holding the phone with just my fingertips” (Gibney 130). This quote shows Alex is struggling from being adopted because she is faced with the problem of calling her biological dad. This is a struggle for Alex internally because it was very hard for her to talk to him after giving her dad a surprise call. Alex read a blog in the library about adopting a child with “special needs.” She was curious about this because her adoption papers all said she had “special needs”. “Black children, especially those marked with some disability, are consistently the cheapest, followed by mixed children, and native and Latino children, then the Asian children” (Gibney 138). This quote shows Alex is struggling with being adopted because she does not have a good understanding of the information that she found in her adoption paperwork labeling her as special needs. She decided to take action by going to the library to learn more about her “special needs”. Alex did this in order to fully understand why her biological dad placed her for adoption.
