The Yalta family left behind their sense of home, family, and security to go to an area perceived as heartless and judgmental. When we drove into Georgia, I had never seen grass so green and wide with trees as tall as skyscrapers, herds of cows and wild horses, and actual houses arranged like those in “Mister Rogers Neighborhood”. Though nothing could replace my first memories, I knew Georgia would be crucial in the development of my childhood and a great impact on my future. Now, why did we move? Why would my parents sacrifice their job security, family, and safety? Education is the answer. Although Patterson was so diverse and unique, the educational system was poverty-stricken as we still had chalkboard walls, outdated textbooks, and were surrounded by a dangerous environment. My dad never had the opportunity to experience the promise that America showcases, but I have the chance to.
