Cultural relativism fits in with the idea of basic human rights because it allows every person their own opportunities to make decisions based on their own opinion and act on those decisions. An example of something socially constructed that wasn't present in the 19th and 20th Century is the idea of childhood life. We have a modern viewpoint of childhood being the calm before the storm of working for the rest of your life so parents “baby” their children for a large portion of their teen years. Many years ago children began working hard at the earliest possible age on the family estate. As soon as a child could walk with ease parents put them to work outside to help provide for the family.
