One real life example that affected how I feel about myself was my Boy Scout Troop and more specifically the eagle scouts in the troop. When I joined the Boy Scouts I looked up to the eagle scouts. The way they carried themselves and their leadership skills set a strong example for the other scouts and me. I followed how they acted not only at the meetings but also in everyday life and took strides to be more like them. My first year in scouts I was appointed patrol leader of the scouts that were my age. I watched closely as to how the older scouts displayed discipline and leadership and how they stayed calm and collected when they were having a hard time getting their patrols together. This was a huge change from my job at a summer camp the previous year. From day one I observed how everyone around me held themselves with such professionalism. From how they dress to how they communicate and act around each other. Noticing how everyone else in the workplace acted really made me feel like I needed to step up my professionalism. I feel a great pressure on me to uphold this standard of professionalism because I represent the lab when I am working with professors and vendors.
These a just a few real life examples of reference groups and how they affect who I am and how I act. Some reference groups have left a permanent impact on my life while others were just a phase or short
