1a. Describe your week (1 paragraph per item)
1 example of what you learned this week
This week, I learned that at the penitentiary, safety is the first priority. Even in the medical units, nothing is allowed without the consent of the lieutenant. As I understand it, Each tier has a lieutenant in charge. All scheduled and unscheduled routines are done under their permission. At any point a lieutenant may revoke anything medical going on in the tier if they deem it necessary. For example, If I was doing my routine morning medication pass in the morning and a fight broke out between inmates, I’d have to stop my routine. If I was not yet in the tier, I would be able to come by after things were secure and I was given the “OK” to come in.

Finding a vein with a needle takes practice and I’m not very good right now. Sue (the phlebotomist) was there to walk me through the steps in case I had forgotten anything. It was my first time on a real person and I was nervous, but there’s only one way to get rid of that nervous feeling and that is to approach it head on. I grabbed the butterfly, the tubes, and the vacutainer holder, along with the gauze, bandaid, alcohol wipe and the tourniquet. Also, I grabbed some gloves. Gloves are a must when dealing with blood, plus they make me feel safe. I approached it with as much confidence as I could, I was professional and tried to act like I knew what I was doing so that I wouldn’t freak the patient out (many of them are afraid of needles). I obtained the patients permission to draw blood. I was still truthful and let him know that it was my first attempt on an actual person. I was courteous in thanking him before and after the procedure for his willingness. I cleaned the site and poked him. I missed the vein but both Sue and the inmate jumped in to help guide me. I was professional and took their advice with a smile, after all both of them are avid vein finders, Sue just does it legally. We did manage to find the vein and celebrate, and I felt a relieved. Next time, I’ll be just as willing to jump in and try
