This enabled me to experience a form of care outside a hospital environment and further solidified my ambition to become a nurse. My current line of work as a Community Carer with Allied Health care has also increased my interest in the nursing profession. I have found the Access to HE Health and social care course that I am currently studying very interesting and am keen to obtain the best results that I can. I have particularly enjoyed the PHP unit in which we discussed at length the history and formation of the NHS and current legislation in contribution to health care provision. Correspondingly I have enjoyed the Health Promotion Unit in which we looked in depth at what Health Promotion means, current campaigns and theories behind health promotion. I was also elected as the class representative by fellow members of the group which involves me attending senior management meetings for the Health and Social Care department and voicing any opinions, concerns or improvements that the class may have in relation the course and workload etc. I currently work as a community carer for Allied Health Care. This role has enabled me to further develop my existing skills in a way that corresponds with some of the basic roles and responsibilities of an adult nurse. I received extensive training in a variety of areas including core care skills (e.g. use of care equipment including hoists and slide sheets), management of medication, safeguarding, emergency first aid, nutrition and food hygiene, dementia awareness and health and safety. On a regular shift I will attend around 8, 30 minute calls in which I provide care to service users in order to support them in their daily lives and the level of care provided depends on the abilities and independence of the individual. This role has provided me with an invaluable opportunity to broaden my knowledge on the health care industry as a whole. Whilst being out of education I worked full time at a local Independent Fostering Agency. Working here I was able to cultivate a variety of skills and attributes that I feel will support me through both university and a career as an adult nurse. Communication was at the forefront of my role; regular correspondence with foster carers and other professional bodies became my second nature. From this I developed the confidence and expertise in dealing with people whilst finding this a very enjoyable aspect of my
