Advancements of Prosthetics Over the Years
1 in 190 Americans are currently living with the loss of a limb, in the year 2005 1.6 million people were living with the loss of a limb (Langtree,2016). Therefore, prosthetics have advanced due to the change to lighter material, the change in mobility (movement),and the design has become more productable and useful for the amputee. “The evolution of prosthetics is a long and storied history, from its primitive beginnings to its sophisticated present, to the exciting visions of the future” (Norton,2007).
Prosthetics believe it or not dates back to the civilizations of Egypt, Greece, and Rome. During this time the prosthetics were made out of fiber,wood,iron, and bronze (Bardhi,2013) , additionally prosthetics during this time were believed to be worn for a sense of “wholeness” (Norton,2007). The very first functional prosthetic was found in Cairo, Egypt in 950 B.C. and it was a big toe made out of wood and leather, which was found on a 50 year old mummified women (Kwon,2016).The leather on the big toe was used as a sleeve to help attach the big toe to the foot, …show more content…
Modern prosthetics today now can mimic the appearance of real hands,for instance the prosthetics can have freckles, veins,hair,fingerprints, and even tattoos. In addition, prosthetics are even able to mimic the function of a natural limb more now than anytime in the past. The cool thing about today’s prosthetics is that they have created a prosthetic for women to wear to formal places, which the prosthetic is a high heeled
