During one of the art shows she meets a man named Osvaldo. She falls in love with Osvaldo who had went away to France and told Nieve he would come back for her when she got her papers to leave the country together. Guerra writes, “Six months to get permission to leave the country, six more and Osvaldo still hasn’t found a way to come and take me with him”(214). Slowly Nieve begins to realize she cannot depend on anyone for anything. Everyone in her life has let her down so far. Guerra writes,”I’m in Havana, and I try, I try to go forward, a little each day”(254). Through all the obstacles and challenges in her life Nieve has become a strong independent woman. Now she has to learn to live with where she is in life at the moment and wait for destiny to happen.
After all the different events that happened in Nieve’s life, she has shown to be persistent in reaching her own happiness. Although her father turned out to be the opposite and did not protect her, her mother could never help her, and Osvaldo her lover let her down, Nieve has always managed to to keep herself together. Some might say that Nieve was just an ordinary girl with ordinary problems, but most people are not like her. She sees the glass half full instead of half empty in the worst of times. Through all her hardships, she began an independent woman and has never given up on life and the future of her
