Some say that you are a product of your environment, which I believe to be true. Being surrounded by so many giving and selfless people I began to implement these qualities into my life and found that producing positivity through actions was something our world needs more of.

I will apply knowledge gained through my ecological studies at The Evergreen State College to make positive changes. Since starting my studies here at Evergreen I have stayed true to my course and attended classes that focus largely on past, present, and future environmental issues. “Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption” is a captivating narration of the impact of empathy and the human spirit. Author Bryan Stevenson works tirelessly to help provide relief for death row inmates who were wrongly condemned, poorly defended, or left to die in America’s overgrowing prison system. He not only offered these people legal advice, but also showed his clients compassion and mercy, which many of them had not previously experienced. This is mostly evident in one specific passage in his story: “There is a strength, a power even, in understanding brokenness, because embracing our brokenness creates a need and desire for mercy, and perhaps a corresponding need to show mercy. When you experience mercy, you learn things that are…

Every American knows of the civil rights leader Marther Luther King Jr., but not many people know about the man who inspired MLK to employ the passive resistance technique as a way of protest. That man is Mahatma Gandhi, he is also known for having this idea that "The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others. " Some people believe that there is no correlation between finding yourself and committing yourself to helping others, but that way of thinking is simply ignorant. The truth is that by losing oneself in the service of others, that person is able to obtain new experiences that will help determine who they want to be in life. Imagine MLK, a black child living in the South, at the age of 14 years.…
