Synopsis of case
Angela is 41 years old African American woman from North Carolina (NC). She has been smoking for a number of years. Angela does not consider herself to be an addict because she does not used other drugs. She tries quitting using a nicotine patch which did not help. Angela believe that a therapeutic approach with medication would be helpful for example Cognitive behavioral treatment (Document: Substance Abuse Case Studies, November1, 2015)
Smoking is a leading cause of disease that is preventable and has significant risk factor for increased cancer, cardiovascular, and respiratory diseases. According to latest estimations by the World Health Organization, smoking tobacco-attribute to deaths expected to reach 6.4 million by 2015 and 8.3 million by 2030(Issa, Abe, Moura, Santos, & Pereira,2013).This assignment will look at an appropriate medication that could be used to assist clients who have developed the smoking habit and would like to quit. Bupropion is highly recommended when other drugs have been ineffective as it acts on chemicals in the brain that are related to nicotine craving (McDonough, 2015). However bupropion can work more effective with nicotine replacement therapy such as nicotine patches, inhalers and gums (Preston et al,2013).Even though bupropion was developed at first as antidepressant to treat depressive moods, it has been having strong effects on smoking cessations(McDonough,2015).
