There is great debate in regard to the effectiveness of the antenatal classes in preparing parents for complications that often occur.
Antenatal classes have shown to not address complications, leaving many parents who experience difficulties unprepared and without direction (Gregory, 2012).
Most parents who experience an un-complicated labor, argue that antenatal classes shouldn’t cover complications as it increases anxiety and stress, whilst almost all parents who experienced complications feel they’d have benefited from having been better prepared by antenatal educators (Gregory, 2012).
It is suggested that the classes should provide basic information to recognise problems, understand what intervention may be administered, what to expect in an emergency delivery, and what happens to sick babies after birth (Gregory, 2012).
