Evaluate project governance guidelines (such as AS8016 and 6Q Governance™) to determine whether they have more potential to overcome the problem of IT project failure than project management methodologies (such as PMBOK and PRINCE2).
Over the last three decades, coping with large information technology(IT) projects has been a difficult and important problem for both practitioners and academic researchers(Ika 2009, Toomey,2009:Weill & Ross,2004:Bekker & Steyn 2009). Research studies show that organisations with effective project governance increase profits by at least 20% when compared to organisations with no governance support (Ross and Weill,2004; Wilson & Pollard,2009).

Project governance lays a lot of stress on present day organizations to invest on information technology which in turn would help in the smooth running and progress of a project. Project failure is often beyond the control of project manager. A study has shown that half of all project failures were due to project governance ( Young,2006) . AS8016 is a standard model comprising of a set of principles and rules prepared, keeping project governance in mind to ensure smooth running of IT projects in particular. AS8016 forms a guidebook and also acts as a bridge between the governing body of the project and the senior management as both in turn become more aware and prepared for the responsibilities they are supposed to carry out in that position during the execution of a project. This standard makes it clear that the governance supervision must continue until the business outcomes have been achieved. If outcome cannot be met then the project must be stopped immediately without any further delay. Corporate governance is known by its 6 main principles which determine the basic outline for overseeing and controlling projects. These principles have similarities with the AS8016 model. The 6 principles mainly emphasize on formulating the basic foundation for monitoring the progress …show more content…
It is structured into three different areas. These are : the project management framework, the standard of project management and project management knowledge areas. It is consisting of a set of rules and principles which are widely followed by project managers and are tried and tested popular methods of managing a project by primarily following 5 major steps of initiating, planning, executing, controlling and closing. When it comes to resolving the issues, PMBOK makes connection to the presence of issues that need to be managed. But there is no way for managing them It considers its management to be outside of its scope. PMBOK is only a framework; the actual needs of the project in question should be determined by a knowledgeable managerial team. It provides nominal scope of various project management methodologies and
