Euthanasia In John Steinbeck's Of Mice And Men

Of Mice and Mice and men consist of many examples of euthanasia. Euthanasia is assisted suicide, physician-assisted suicide , doctor-assisted dying , and more loosely termed mercy killing, means to take a deliberate action with the express intention of ending a life to relieve suffering. In Of Mice and Men George killed Lennie by shooting him in the back of the head. The reason behind the killing was because George was left with little to no options on what to do with Lennie. Since Lennie was incapable of making the decision of if he wanted to die or not George was the only other one who had the right to decide. It might be hard to kill someone you have spent so much time with but George did what was best for Lennie and it was by killing him. …show more content…
The book started off suggesting Lennie was dumb and mentally slow. As the story goes on we can see Lennie’s disorder get worse and worse. Throughout the whole book we see Lennie suffer from a mental disorder. George states, “He [Lennie] ain't no cuckoo, he's dumb as hell but he ain't crazy,” George knows that Lennie is dumb and even tells Slim in this quote. Good examples of this would be when Lennie killed the puppy because he was petting him too hard and when he killed Curley's wife not even realizing he was hurting her. Lennie did not know he was killing 2 living things which just goes to show you that he is not capable of making any decisions of whether he should live. Even though Lennie is big he still isn’t very smart. Lennie has just as much logic as a newborn baby and in source B it states “unbearable suffering must be present” and “unbearable suffering must be confirmed by at least one independent doctor. Even though George is not a doctor he knew what was best for Lennie in this situation and it as to kill him. All of this concludes that Lennie was too dumb and mentally challenged to make the right decision for his own

Marya Mannes once said, “Euthanasia… is simply to be able to die with dignity at a moment when life is devoid of it.” Euthanasia, which can be defined as induced death free of pain and anxiety has often been used in medical procedures to allow patients to die a peaceful death. There are various forms of euthanasia that have been used, one being non-voluntary euthanasia in which someone connected to the patient makes the final decision due to their lack of ability to answer for themselves. This highly debatable topic was portrayed in John Steinbeck’s novel Of Mice and Men, where George shoots his disabled friend, Lennie, towards the end of the book using this method. Because of his close relationship with Lennie, George was justified in shooting…

“In the 1960s and ’70s he worked as a staff pathologist at hospitals in Michigan and southern California; then in 1982 he retired from practice and began to devote full time to his mission: helping patients end their lives.” Jack Kevorkian was an American physician who performed a medical practice called euthanasia on his patients. Euthanasia can be defined as “the painless killing of a patient suffering from an incurable and painful disease or irreversible coma”, and the practice also happens to be illegal in most countries. Euthanasia takes on an important role in the novel “Of Mice and Men” by John Steinbeck, as it displays why the character, George, was justified in shooting Lennie. Lennie, if he had lived, would have gone through a life…

George knew that this would cause problems for both him and Lennie so he decided to put Lennie to death. When preparing to shoot Lennie, George had a thought to himself,” If I was alone I could live so easy. I could get a job an’ not have no mess” (Steinbeck 103). Realizing the consequences of what Lennie had done because he could not control his actions before, George realized that there was no hope for Lennie and that he had to shoot him. This was the right thing to do because if he had not done this, Lennie would have continued to lose control and create more problems, especially for…

I agree with Aristotle’s statement about how suffering and death in literature leave the audience to feel relieved rather than depressed. At the end of the story, the author created this built up tension with everyone getting ready for the manhunt and as George was talking to Lennie. At the end of the story, similar to when Candy waited for his dog to die until he could peacefully sleep, the tension was immediately released from the story when George did shot him. Feeling this release of tension once it happened made me feel relieved because neither Lennie nor George would have to suffer anymore. Lennie wouldn’t have to suffer of constant bullying by Curley and people questioning his mental state, and George would be free to have the true responsibilities…
