European knights were very important to the middle ages. Knights had to train, protect Barons and their lords, and go into battle when needed. The first step to becoming a knight was to serve as a page. Usaully at the age of seven, the young boy left their home and became a servant in the lord’s castle. Instead of getting paid money the page learned dignified manners, received a basic education, and played rough with the other pages. Pages didn’t train but the next step was a squire, and the squires trained.

A dubbing ceremony, is when the squire turns into a knight. The soon to be knight knelt down in front of his master or lord, and recieved a hard slap to remember the oath he promised to follow. After the hard slap a friendlier sword tap on the shoulders was given. The newly dubbed knight was given the title “Sir” and could seek service at the lords castle.
If the king or lord didn’t need or had enough knights to gaurd his castle, the lord would send the knight to go protect a Barons mansion from attack. Barons were a rich royal family.
